Majolica Patterns

Browse through information and photographs that showcase different themes and patterns of colorful majolica pottery. During the Italian Renaissance, the term referred to lusterware. Then it came to mean any ceramics made in Italy or not that was tin glazed. Tin glazing produced an iridescent effect. Many of the designs feature animals, fish, and other motifs found in nature. Certain colors and patterns became identified with a specific area or country. For example ceramics made at Deruta, Italy were known for the rich ruby red color.

In England pink and white ware simulated mother-of-pearl effects, often in the shapes of shells. Raised, multi-colored pastoral scenes were created and scenes with historical connections. These designs command high prices. Majolica ware broadened out to include various animals, including roosters, birds, cats, and floral patterns. Expect some crazing on very old pieces.
